Is Apple’s 4G system update designed to display more accurate signal bars indicating wireless network strength doing anything? I don’t think so. The intuitive visual message conveyed by signal bars is meaningless in the context of how wireless networks actually work. The original iPhone/iPad display would show five bars for any signal that fell in well over the upper half of the possible range of signals (from -99 dBm to -51 dBm). The first four shorter bars showed finer gradations in the smaller, weakest range of possible signals. That’s like counting from one to four, and then expressing the numbers five to 10 as simply “more.” If you assume that “more” equals “five,” you’re likely to misinterpret what numbers one through four really mean.

iPhone sales are screaming through the roof. At&t is fine. Droid sucks, Spring will go bankrupt. Anything else?

The new Apple Track[ad is similar to track pads on laptops and can be used instead of a mouse or in conjunction with one. The pad’s entire surface is a button that clicks, so that people can use it in place of a mouse. “Swiping through pages online feels just like flipping through pages in a book or magazine. And inertial scrolling makes moving up and down a page more natural than ever,” says Apple on its Magic Trackpad web page. It is made from a glass-covered aluminum and is the same angle and height as a Mac desktop keyboard, which it’s designed to sit next to. It comes as a standalone accessory and costs $69.

Motorola and Verizon are getting desperate as they prepare for the launch of the Droid X, a new cell phone powered by the Google Android operating system. And to hype the phone even more, it appears Verizon is launching an online game and giving away free phones. Bloggers at cell phone enthusiast site BerryScoop.com point out a scene from the latest ad for the Motorola Droid X in which the reflection of a Twitter account is seen in the close up shot of an eyeball. doesn’t have any posts just yet, but it’s very clearly an official site, even though it isn’t linked anywhere from the Verizon website, of course. But the account’s “bio” reveals the secret: “The next generation of [Droid] is coming soon, but you might get yours before that. Droid X phones are hidden across the country. Follow us for clues.”

Apple said it sold more than 600,000 of its iPhone 4 which is a record for a single day of preorders. At this rate it will surpass sales of its previous iPhone as well as its iPad tablet computer, and sounded a strong challenge to rivals like Nokia, which warned of weaker-than-expected sales at its phones unit. I have been concerned that Apple supply shortages had to delay the international launch of the iPad after it ran into component deficits — would drive impatient buyers to rivals.

he iPhone 4 is scheduled to hit stores on June 24. Apple’s website said on Wednesday morning that pre-ordered phones would be shipped by July 2. It had previously promised shipments by June 24.Apple apologized for the ordering snafu, asking frustrated would-be buyers to “try again.” But AT&T said the availability of inventory would determine whether it could resume taking orders. Sales of my book: “iPhone and iPad Apps for Absolute Beginners have not been affected though.”We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again … once the iPhone 4 is in stock,” Apple said in a statement.

the iPhone 4 is sold out and not be available except to the few that actually wait in line for the unreserved phones on launch day – June 24th. Read the official statement after the jump. The official statement from AT&T:

“Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We’ll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24.”

Apples’ pre-sales were “higher than they expected” and stated that:

“Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.”

The Enterprise Mail app can now handle multiple Exchange accounts and supports Exchange Server 2010. iOS4 features more than 1,500 features. iOS4 features include multitasking, folders, retina display integration, mail – unified inbox & threading, Enhanced Camera & Photos apps, Deeper Enterprise support, and a lot more.

The New 4g iPhone revealed yesterday (mmm I’m in Poland now ) operating system is called iOS4, and has a front side camera called “FaceTime” that amongst other things cam do video conferencing and editing.

he iPhone 4, has about 100 new features that aren’t available in the current iPhone 3GS. Some of the biggest changes include a higher-resolution screen, a better battery, a 5 megapixel HD photo and video camera, a gyroscope for improved rotation sensitivity and a thinner, more industrial look. It is 24% thinner than the iP. It goes on sale on June 24 — $199 for a 16 gigabyte model and $299 for 32 GB model. That’s the same pricing scheme and size availability currently offered for the iPhone 3GS. Starting June 24, an 8 GB iPhone 3GS will be available for $99, and the second-generation iPhone 3G will be discontinued. The FaceTime feature won’t be available over 3G this year, but Apple is working with its global mobile carriers to carry the feature over wireless networks in the future.

The other new features didn’t disappoint. The screen’s resolution has been vastly improved, displaying 326 pixels per inch, which is four times the resolution of the iPhone 3GS. The new phone will give users the ability to talk for seven hours on one battery charge, up from five hours on the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 4 will also let users record and edit video in HD, and it has the same ultra-fast A4 chip that operates the iPad.

Though this was the first time that Apple discussed its new device, images of a prototype were leaked by tech blog Gizmodo in April.

“A lot of you have already seen this,” said Jobs, adding, “believe me, you ain’t seen it.”

The new OS “iOS 4″ will be available for a free download to second-generation iPod Touch users and iPhone 3G and 3GS users June 21, and it will be automatically loaded onto the iPhone 4. It will allow multitasking, use of folders, access to Apple’s iBooks app and the new “iAd” mobile advertising network, though not all of the functionality will be available on the iPhone 3G or the iPod Touch.
